Purpose of the Commitments Database
The Yukon Fish and Wildlife Commitments Database tracks the status of commitments and recommendations related to fish and wildlife management made as a result of regional, community-based, co-operative, multi-agency planning initiatives.

Yukon fish & wildlife planning: A brief history
Regional, community-based fish and wildlife planning was developed collaboratively by the Yukon Government, First Nations, and Renewable Resources Councils. It started in the early 1990's in response to implementation of Yukon First Nation Final Agreements and the subsequent need for a co-operative and coordinated approach to managing fish and wildlife populations. It is now widely supported by communities, First Nations, Renewable Resources Councils, and the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board.

Unifying management of fish and wildlife in this way has strengthened working relationships and enabled management agencies to collectively implement objectives and meet obligations in Yukon's Final Agreements.

Contents of the Commitments Database
The information contained in the Commitments Database is organized into four related categories: management issues are identified during planning initiatives and addressed by commitments to action by participants, and recommendations for action to be submitted to other agencies. All of this information is documented in management plans.

Issues
Fish and wildlife management issues are raised during management planning processes. Issues may relate to population management, harvest levels, habitat management, or other topics of concern. In the database, they are described by a short summary statement and are usually followed by a more detailed explanation of the issue.

Commitments
Commitments are the actions that will be taken to address an issue. Commitments are assigned to one or more of the plan partners. The first partner listed is the lead on fulfilling the commitment. Target timelines for completion of each commitment are identified and coincide with government fiscal years (e.g. "2005" indicates that work should be carried out between April 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005). Timelines may be for specific years (e.g. 2004, 2005, 2006) or carried out over a range of years (e.g. 2004-2009).

Recommendations
Boards and Councils established under final agreements have recommendation-making powers on any matters related to the conservation on fish and wildlife. Recommendations are typically made to government agencies that are obliged to respond, and to First Nations and other Boards and Councils. This database tracks all recommendations.

Plans
Issues, commitments, and recommendations arise from planning initiatives and are usually documented in management plans. These plans are the main source of commitments listed in this database. Plans may have been developed as regional community-based fish and wildlife management plans, species-specific management plans, or habitat protection area plans.
