Aishihik Integrated Wildlife Management Plan
Harvest: Planning Actions 1999-2003

Concerns

Community concerns regarding wildlife harvesting in the planning area are summarized as follows:
a) Lack of harvesting opportunities for all hunters
b) Even a slight excess in harvesting could upset the population balance between prey and predators
c) Harvest information for the planning area is incomplete
d) Harvest pressures are increasing due to access

Solutions

According to the integrated format of this plan, solutions for the above concerns are as follows:
a) Provide reasonable harvest opportunities consistent with Principle 1 of the plan by having prey and predator populations at or near agreed upon target levels
b) Regulate and monitor all wildlife harvesting by all hunters in the planning area
c) Provide reasonable harvest opportunities consistent with Principle 1 of the plan by maintaining prey and predator populations at or near agreed upon target levels
d) Regulate and monitor all wildlife harvesting by all hunters in the planning area.

Actions

The harvest target for moose is to be set at no more that 2% of the population. The caribou harvest is to be deferred at this time to allow the herd to continue growing. Actions which implement the above harvest solutions are scheduled and assigned in the plan as follows:

Note: The schedule for the planning year is based on the biological year, i.e. after young are born, for greater consistency between population and harvest monitoring information. The planning year is June 1 to May 31, i.e. where an action item is slated for 2000 this means from June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001.
