Aishihik Integrated Wildlife Management Plan
Population: Planning Actions 1999-2003

Concerns

A variety of community concerns about wildlife in the Aishihik planning area were related to the future status of wildlife populations, particularly potential declines in moose, caribou and sheep plus some discomfort with current estimates of grizzly numbers. It should be noted that all bison concerns have been addressed through the Yukon Bison Management Plan, a paper copy of which is available by calling (867) 667-3645.

Solutions

Solutions for addressing population status focused on monitoring wildlife populations and their environment, and using suitable scientific techniques supported with local observations.

Actions

For each species a population goal was established for the 5-year plan. This goal represents a 'soft' target . A target is necessary to establish a context for other management actions such as harvest levels.

Note: The schedule for the planning year is based on the biological year, i.e. after young are born, for greater consistency between population and harvest monitoring information. The planning year is June 1 to May 31, i.e. where an action item is slated for 2000 this means from June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001.

Sheep
Note: Although sheep populations are monitored, in the Yukon they are not managed according to numbers, but according to the 'full curl' harvest regulation. A population target is therefore not appropriate for this plan. Currently, sheep numbers are considerably lower than in the past, and sheep are being managed to increase in the area (see Ruby Range sheep recommendations, which are available by calling (867) 667-5464).
