Regarding: Efficiency of Yukon Government interdepartmental communication regarding reviews of land use applications

Issue:

Although habitat protection is recognized as a key component of wildlife management and although key wildlife habitats are documented by the Yukon Department of Renewable Resources, such information is often not taken into account adequately during the interdepartmental reviews of land use proposals such as applications for agricultural leases. This problem was considered at the recent Habitat Protection Workshop where interdepartmental and intergovernmental communication concerning Habitat Protection Areas was highlighted as one of the chief requirements for efficient and effective habitat protection.

RECOMMENDATION to YFWMB:

The workshop agreed that existing mechanisms of land use reviews should be evaluated to ensure that wildlife habitat values are more fully considered. In view of the YFWMB's role in chairing the Habitat Protection Working Group, it was concluded that this task should be recommended to them to pursue.
