Action Details: Habitat

Solution: Get protection from hunting/harassment for certain areas.

The requirements for habitat protection are quite variable but specific means of addressing these are very limited. 'Notation' represents an interest in land that exists for wildlife and is made by a particular government branch, e.g. agriculture or forestry, for its own administrative policies. A riparian (riverside/floodplain) notation for the Dezadeash River has been made by the Agriculture branch of YDRR, which means agricultural leases are no longer available there. A stronger form of protection is the 'Land Reserve' which can be requested of the government by one of its agencies. A reserve for Kusawa Lake is related to its intended park status. The third level of protection is a 'Land Survey', however, none of these are appropriate for many wildlife habitat needs such as protection from hunting or harassment at a particular time of year (e.g. areas preferred by cow moose to calve). Since this is a common concern for wildlife planning in the Yukon, a recommendation arose from the workshop that the ARRC will make to YTG concerning amendments to the wildlife act passed in 1992 (but never proclaimed) that would provide more versatile legal means of protecting wildlife habitats for a variety of purposes.
