Action Details: Habitat

Concern: There is no overall strategy for protecting key moose habitats.

Habitat protection is a primary concern of wildlife management, but so far in Yukon there are few available means of adequately protecting habitats at the level they require. Unless an area is given a very formal designation, e.g. federal/territorial park, national wildlife refuge, habitats are not adequately protected - not even in Game Sanctuaries such as McArthur. Identification on key habitat maps or as 'notations' in other land use processes, e.g. agriculture are effective mainly at an administrative or environmental review level and have no other legal standing or universal recognition.
