Action Details: Harvest

Solution 3: Implement system to address overharvesting in B.C. if required.

The B.C. section of the Alsek Area consists of two management units 6-28, 6-29 where there is an open season for moose (August 15 - November 15). The B.C. Parks policy is that the maximum allowable harvest is 10% of the population. B.C. Environment is less concerned with total harvests and more with ratios of bulls to cows and cows to calves as means of managing populations. In management unit 6-28, there is a strong likelihood that, although the total harvest is under 10%, it is coming from a relatively small area due to the lack of suitable hunting terrain. This cannot be definitely established through the voluntary harvest information system which does not provide point locations for harvests but only a total for each management unit.
