Action Details: Harvest

Concern: Cow moose hunting is harder on the population than taking bulls only.

Removal of a bull moose is of minor significance to a population so long as other bulls can assume its breeding activities. In the Yukon, the accepted ratio where this becomes a problem is below 30 bulls:100 cows when the bulls may not be able to breed all the available cows. Cow hunting on the other hand cannot be compensated for in the same way since removal of a cow means also the removal of all the calves she was likely to have. Therefore, where cows are being hunted, the population can provide fewer total animals for harvest than if only bulls are hunted. (See also Concern/Overhunting)
