RECOMMENDATION RRC-3
from the Mayo District Renewable Resources Council resulting from
INTEGRATED WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLANNING WORKSHOP

To the Yukon Department of Renewable Resources
Re: Habitat Protection in Yukon

Current Status:

In Na'cho N'y'ak Dun Traditional Territory, key wildlife habitats have been identified as an initiative of the 1993/96 Integrated Big Game Management Plan and the Key Habitat mapping program. Under the current Integrated Wildlife management Plan for NNDTT, several action items will address further identification and protection of key wildlife habitats in the Traditional Territory.

Concern:

Apart from the creation of Special Management Areas under the Umbrella Final Agreement, there is no legal means of protecting specific wildlife habitats in the Yukon.

RECOMMENDATION to YDRR:

The Council, therefore, recommends that the Yukon Government amend the Yukon Wildlife Act to provide for habitat protection regulations that can be used to protect specific wildlife habitats from particular types of disturbance or destruction.
