Work with community to develop proposal for restrictions on All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) use in certain areas through wildlife regulations

Use of ATVs by hunters is a territory-wide issue involving a wide variety of wildlife concerns, public values, and legislation. It was felt that these must be addressed at the territorial level to provide some universal management tools that could be uniformly and fairly applied wherever they were required in the territory. (Recommendation R-1)

Elaboration: Use of ATVs (4/6 wheelers) for hunting can be restricted through the wildlife regulations by confining ATVs to designated routes. Restrictions are currently in place for game management subzones 5-36,37,38 and 39. Similar restrictions are proposed for subzone 5-34. In the absence of a Renewable Resources Council, such proposals can be made by RRDC to the YFWMB and it will go through the standard public review stages.

Interim measures:

Some options for the community to consider for the near future are:

  1. Signs - a sign on the North Canol to the effect that the use of ATVs should be restricted to specific areas.
  2. Handouts - pamphlet distributed at the ferry or hunter check station explaining concern over ATV use and rational for designated areas along the North Canol corridor.
