Agreed not to census moose but to infer status from 1999/2000 FCH census

Since both caribou and moose populations showed such similar responses to the wolf reduction program, it was agreed that tracking the Finlayson Caribou Herd population could be used as an indicator of the status of moose. To count moose over the entire area would be more difficult and expensive. Smaller areas around Finlayson and Frances Lakes were counted in November 1996. Wolves seem to prefer moose as prey, until their availability declines at which time caribou may become more attractive. Patterns of recruitment in annual caribou rut counts likely also reflect the pattern in regional moose populations.
