RECOMMENDATION R-1
from the Ross River Dena Council arising from the
INTEGRATED WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLAN
for the Ross River Traditional Territory

To the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board
Re: Yukon-wide ATV regulation

Current Status:

The use of ATVs for hunting has been steadily increasing in the Yukon for a number of years with the result that habitat destruction, abuse of trapline trails and other problems are arising in certain areas. Many truck hunters transport ATVs and off load them at popular access points. Others fly ATVs into more remote areas.

Concern:

At present, the only means of restricting ATV use is through designating routes in the wildlife regulations which is a cumbersome and at times, an inappropriate solution.

RECOMMENDATION to YFWMB:

The RRDC recommends that the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board initiate a full public discussion of ATV use and regulation in the territory with the intention of making recommendations for the control of such vehicles to protect wildlife and their habitats.
