RECOMMENDATION R-4
from the Ross River Dena Council arising from the
INTEGRATED WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLAN
for the Ross River Traditional Territory

To the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board
Re: Yukon-wide Catch and Release Policy

Current Status:

The use of barbless hooks is presently required for Yukon lakes designated by the Yukon Department of Renewable Resources for "High Quality Management". Catch and release fishing is also promoted for recreational angling throughout the territory.

Concern:

While recognized as a means of protecting fish populations while maintaining recreational angling opportunities, catch and release fishing is contrary to the beliefs and traditions of many Yukon First Nations.

RECOMMENDATION to YFWMB:

To facilitate present and future integrated fish and wildlife management planning in the Yukon, a territory-wide policy on catch and release fishing is required. The RRDC, therefore, recommends that the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board undertake full public consultation on this issue with the intention of making appropriate recommendations to territorial and First Nation governments.
